EMP Metal Transfer

Recently EMP have added further functionality to their system in the form of a transfer port on the EMP Charge well. This is located in the side of the charge well above the normal operating level of the vortex.

A pneumatically or manually operated tapping plug allows opening of this port and then simply increasing the power to the EMP pump raises the level of the aluminium in the charge well providing transfer through the tapping hole into a launder or ladle.

The speed of transfer is controlled by the operator who is controlling the the speed of the EMP pump from the operator control panel. Once the ladle is full the speed is reduced, the tapping cone closed and the ladle removed.

All of this is done in a safe and controlled manner from a stationary furnace.

The picture below shows the tapping arrangement in the EMP Chargewell.

The EMP can also transfer to feed a casting machine as illustrated below.

  • The Thyristor based EMP pump power circuit , coupled with laser level device enables a fully controlled quiescent metal flow into the transfer launder
  • A steady state transfer rate is achieved, while maintaining furnace circulation for temperature and chemical homogeneity during a casting cycle
